Botanical Name - Curcuma longa

Turmeric Is a spice that is mainly used throughout Asia, and it has been an ingredient in curries. Turmeric has a bitter, warm taste and is frequently used to flavour or colour curry powders, mustards, different kinds of butter, & cheeses. Curcuma longa is the root of the plant, which is also used traditional medicine for a various skin condition, digestive issues, pains and aches. It contains a yellow-coloured chemical called curcumin, which is often used to colour foods, cosmetics and personal care products. The group of curcuminoids has various health-promoting effects.

Some of the essential curcuminoids are demethoxycurcumin, bisdemethoxycurcumin & curcumin. Of this curcumin is the most relevant and most used as a natural supplement because of its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antitumour effects. Curcumin that is extracted from the turmeric plant has antimicrobial, antifungal medicinal properties, and it may also help people with osteoarthritis and obesity. Turmeric as a plant has got the attention of the medical world with research pointing to protecting the brain as it ages and shows promises in the treatment of Parkinson's disease. We source certified organic Turmeric from Erode, Tamil Nadu, which received Geographical Indication GI tag from the Geographical Indication Registry in the year of 2019. A Geographical Indication is a name or sign used on certain products that correspond to a specific geographical location or origin. Erode turmeric is a rhizome, both finger and bulb obtained from the Erode local cultivar.

Claim for uniqueness

In its claim for uniqueness, the mean length of the fingers of Erode turmeric was about 4.15cm, and the mean circumference was about 3.03cm. The mean bulb length of the mother rhizome is about 4.54cm, and the mean circumference is 6.54cm. Quality parameters of the turmeric included 2.5 to 4.5% of curcumin content, golden yellow colour and resistance to pests after boiling. The crop is grown in hot moist conditions prevalent in the area with temperature ranging from 20 degrees to 37.9 degrees Celsius with an average of 600 to 800 mm rainfall in a year.
